40 pupils expelled and 3,160 suspended from Cheshire schools

Forty pupils were expelled for assaults and abuse in Cheshire schools last year, latest figures show.

And there were 3,160 pupils suspended – equivalent to 17 exclusions for each school day throughout the year.

The latest Government statistics show that levels of exclusion from schools in Cheshire are among the highest in the North West.

Nantwich MP Edward Timpson expressed concern at the figures which show a rise in reported physical assault, verbal abuse and threatening behaviour on both pupils and teachers.

Mr Timpson claims Labour’s rules have deliberately made it more difficult for schools to expel pupils.

He says this undermines authority of headteachers and means bullies and disruptive children end up back at the same school as their victims.

Mr Timpson said: “We have some great schools here in Crewe and Nantwich, which is a great testament to the hard work of our teachers.

“But it is also clear from these figures we have a serious problem with discipline. Unless there is good discipline, pupils can’t learn and teachers can’t teach.

“We need to give our teachers the power to restore discipline.”
